Fra Angelico blue pigment extraction. True Lapis Lazuli pigment. Method based on recipe from the book "Il Libro dell' Arte" by Cennino d'Andrea Cennini. ©2014 Attila Gazo (masterpigments.com)
In the Middles-Ages few people knew where exactly it came from, very few were aware of the techniques needed to extract this wonderful deep-blue pigment from Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious gemstone.
It was the most mysterious and valuable pigment used to make paint for only the most special tasks, such as the robe of the Virgin Mary for instance.
The video above shows how the minerals must be extracted from the lapis.
A Dominican friar and painter Fra Angelico lived in Florence, Italy, during the early 1400s. He is considered one of the best fresco painters of the century.
About Me
- *Fairyduster
- I was born in the land of Cathars and musketeers in South-Western France (of the Cathars remain vivid memories in the folklore of the region and a language called "Occitan".) These days I enjoy the very different beauty and chemistry of the Sonoran Desert of Az in the U.S. A visit to my stores and products listed on the right will introduce you to my art, mostly dealing with fantasy, digital, often integrated art. Many pieces in the past were finalists in online exhibitions for digital art, here and abroad.
